Is é an cuspóir atá le Tionscadal Logainmneacha na Scoileanna ná páistí bunscoile ar fud Phort Láirge a ghríosadh chun aird a thabhairt ar na logainmneacha áitiúla thimpeall orthu agus taighde a dhéanamh ar cad as a tháinig na hainmneacha úd. Tá sé i gceist feasacht ar oidhreacht shaibhir chultúrtha ár logainmneacha a ardú. Gach bliain tugann an Cartlannaí agus an tOifigeach Gaeilge, le cabhair ó bhaill an Choiste Logainmneacha, cuairt ar scoileanna éagsúla ar fud an chontae chun an tionscadal a chur ina láthair.

Léirigh d’Áit –Ceardlanna Maisiúcháin
I mí na Bealtaine agus mí an Mheithimh 2021, mar chuid de chlár Éire Ildánach 2021, d’eagraigh an Coiste Logainmneacha (tríd an tOifigeach Gaeilge agus Cartlannaí an Chontae) tionscadal cheardlanna maisiúcháin ar líne chun páistí bunscoile a spreagadh chun smaoineamh ar stair agus ar oidhreacht a gceantair dhúchais agus na logainmneacha mórthimpeall orthu. Ghlac thart ar 150 páiste ó sé bhunscoil éagsúil ar fud na nDéise páirt i gceardlanna maisiúcháin ar líne leis an maisitheoir proifisiúnta, Valeria Weerasinghe, atá tar éis obair le Cartoon Saloon ar an gcartún Puffin Rock, a bhuaigh gradam Emmy.
Illustrate Your Place – Cartoon Workshops
In May & June 2021 as part of the 2021 Creative Waterford programme, the Placenames Committee (through the Council’s Archivist and Irish Officer) began rolling out an on-line cartoon workshop project to encourage primary school children (5th & 6th class primarily) to think about their local history and what gives them a sense of place, by illustrating their local placenames. Some 150 schoolchildren from six primary schools in Waterford City & County took part in on-line cartoon workshops with professional illustrator, Valeria Weerasinghe, who has worked with Cartoon Saloon on the Emmy award winning Puffin Rock cartoon. Valeria provided online interactive workshops over Zoom, showing students how to create illustrations using some of the features and placenames in their local area. During the workshops, the students discussed and examined the origins, meaning and history of these placenames as a basis for their illustrations. Here are some examples of the students’ work:
